Jon Ruben admitted 17 offences at the judicial center on Friday

An individual who contaminated candy with sedative and provided them to minors at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual offenses against two children both nine and 10.

The accused was arrested after eight children and a grown-up became sick at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from that region, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he appeared at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Yet, he denied a single sexual charge he was facing, which was concerning a young boy.

The defendant was kept in jail ahead of a further hearing on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, presenting evidence, outlined Ruben's offending to the court.

She said his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he ran.

Ruben played a "treat game" with the minors, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were settling down and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge the defendant had played this game with the boys "over an extended period", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She explained the defendant had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had worries in recently.

The prosecutor added: "In the summer" his stepchild had worries about what was going on, justifiably.

"They resolved" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel said objects including baby oil, ointment and injection devices were found, and his family member notified the authorities about his concerns.

She said the defendant proceeded to conduct the "candy game" with six boys that time - July 26th - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that time," she added.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was investigating the police response of the events.

Mrs Prior explained the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the stepson called the law enforcement once more.

She said Ruben then played the "treat game" in a area of five youngsters.
