Trans director Sam Feder's newest film "Heightened Scrutiny" provides a powerful two-part perspective – simultaneously an personal portrait of a key trans advocate and a pointed examination of media reporting about transgender issues.
This documentary traces ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he prepares for oral arguments in the landmark Supreme Court case the Skirmetti case. These proceedings happened in late 2024, with the court eventually deciding in favor of the state's position, practically enabling restrictions on healthcare for transgender young people to remain in place across over twenty US states.
We produced Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, explained Feder during a discussion. By contrast, my previous film Disclosure took me five years, so this was quite rushed. Our intention was to generate dialogue so people would learn more about the case.
While Feder offers a extensive critique of how major publications have disseminated transphobic narratives, the film's greatest contribution may be its engaging portrayal of Strangio. Usually a reserved lawyer in media appearances, Strangio displays his authenticity throughout the documentary.
That was a significant challenge, to reveal aspects of my life to a documentary crew that I had worked hard to keep personal, shared Strangio. Feder said he wanted future generations to know that we struggled, to see what was done in defense of these fights for our material survival.
To support Strangio's account, Feder incorporates numerous transgender voices, such as prominent leaders from activism and entertainment. The documentary also includes viewpoints from non-trans supporters who examine how mainstream publications have added to harmful portrayals of trans people.
The experience of transgender minors central to the court battle is shown through a remarkable 12-year-old student named Mila. Viewers first see her speaking out for her fellow students at a educational meeting, with subsequent footage showing her protesting for trans rights outside the highest court.
This film also contains poignant moments where Feder transcends the constant political struggle, such as footage of Strangio vacationing in Italy and receiving a body art featuring verses from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prophecy."
The tattoo moment is among my favorites in the movie, shared Strangio. Getting inked is almost like a meditative experience for me, to be fully present in my body and to think of it as a vehicle for things that are meaningful to me.
The filmmaker's focus to lovingly documenting Strangio getting to his body art highlights that this film is essentially about trans bodies – not only those of youth who face restriction of their ability to live authentically in their own bodies, but also the physical forms of the many subjects who participate in the film.
I make films with a message, and part of that is choosing people who are brilliant and articulate enough to hold the camera, shared Feder. When people ask me what they should wear for an filming, my answer is whatever makes you feel confident. This is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we face challenges so much with our appearance.Impact and Hope
A key element that causes Feder's works stand out is his obvious talent for making his transgender subjects feel comfortable, recognized and admired. This technique creates authentic chemistry between Feder and Strangio, enabling the filmmaker to realize his aim of portraying Strangio as a complete individual and providing a testament for posterity of how persistently he and others have campaigned for trans liberties.
I don't want people to find themselves in a place of constant discouragement because of what the law is not giving us, stated Strangio. I aim to be in a method of using the law to minimize harm, but not to turn it into some sort of pathway for our liberatory aspirations. Official institutions is not going to be the mirror through which we see ourselves. Our community are that mirror, and it's really crucial that we persist having that dialogue in addition to conversations about pushing against these laws and approaches.Heightened Scrutiny is presently accessible for digital rental during Transgender Awareness Week and will receive a broader release at a subsequent date.
